I have seen some postw where stenciling has been very successful but i am looking to paint he whole carpet.

Working with a darker color canvas means you might need a base for your painting or the paint you use should be thicker otherwise it might not be visible enough. The carpet will be stiff at first but will soften as you add more coats.
